That is the question I pose today regarding Anzac Day...
Every year it gets bigger and bigger, and to be honest I'm getting a little sick of it. I know I could get howled down in protest over it, but seriously folks, do we need all this hoo-ha? Maybe the 90th anniversay made the day a bit more meaningful than usual but still it was over the top at times.
I think the day is very important for us to remember the lives that were lost and to thank the armed forces for protecting and fighting for us, but I think the whole Gallipoli thing has turned into a bit of a circus. For a start the whole event was a complete cock-up. Anyone who has actually read and studied the event knows that.
Struggling to put my thoughts into words on this subject so i might come back to it, but I'm sure you get my point.

You know Timmy my dislike of the glorification of war used to extend to Anzac day. I saw it much as you do now. My cynicism soaked personality actually thrived on the negativity this opinion generated. However I believe that ANzac day represents more than a rememberance of a tragic past event. It is the beginnings of an ever growing Australian identity. We are a young nation without centuries of experiences that have helped shape us as a people. This has perhaps left us with abit of a hole in our national psyche. The truth is we really are a unique people in the world (this was made quite obvious on our recent OS trip) stage and this should be celebrated! Anzac day and others like it are not just a "silly outdated tradition" but are a way for us as Australians to find, shape and IDENTIFY our unique national identity.
It sounds nationalistic and patriotic. But why not?
